LG notches 10M worldwide sales of LTE-enabled smartphones




LG Electronics announced today it has sold more than 10 million LTE-capable smartphones worldwide as the company grapples with dwindling market share.


The milestone comes a little less than a little more than six months after the LG announced it had surpassed 5 million sales of LTE-enabled phones.


"Aggressive pushing forward with 4G LTE technology allows LG satisfy the needs of consumers and is a huge factor in our growing success in global LTE smartphone sales," LG CEO Jong-seok Park said in statement. "Having established ourselves as a major industry player, we will continue to expand our footprint in the global LTE market with a wider range of differentiated, high quality LTE smartphones."




LG said it hopes to double its LTE smartphone presence in 2013 as LTE smartphone shipment growth is expected to triple. Strategy Analytics said in December that its research indicated global LTE smartphone shipments would hit 275 million this year.


The company attributed its explosive growth in the segment to its expansion last year into markets such as the United States, Japan, Germany, and South Korea. Recent rollouts of the LG Optimus G in more than 50 additional countries also contributed to the milestone.


As impressive as the sales figure is, LG continues to lose ground in the LTE market, according to research firm Strategy Analytics. In the third quarter of 2012, LG's market share fell to 9 percent from 15 percent in the previous quarter. Samsung remained the market leader even though its share fell from 51 percent to 40 percent. Apple brought in 26.7 percent for second place.


The announcement comes on the heels of LG's overhaul of its
Android product line at the Mobile World Congress last month in Barcelona, Spain. LG says it is targeting the spectrum of LTE customers, with its G series for deep-pocketed early adopters, the F series with the mission of "4G LTE for everyone," the lower-end L series, and the Vu
tablets.

Dropbox users getting spammed, might be from earlier hack



It looks like Dropbox may be grappling with some leftover issues from hackers' access into the system last July.

Over the past 24 hours, users have been posting on the file-sharing site's forum, saying that they're being hit with spam e-mails sent to e-mail accounts used only for Dropbox.

"My Dropbox specific email has been receiving spam since the 20th of February," Daniel B. wrote today. Richard F. wrote, "I have an internal to my company email address that I used for Dropbox only and I am getting the same fake paypal scam emails. This has been happening since about Monday."

Dropbox experienced a data leak last summer when hackers accessed usernames and passwords from third-party sites and then used them to get into Dropbox users' accounts. With this data breach, a few hundred Dropbox users received spam e-mails about online casinos and gambling sites.

The company has since put in place additional security controls with the aim to avoid a repeat occurrence, including two-factor authentication, mechanisms to identify suspicious activity, and password changes.

Rather than being a new breach, Dropbox seems to believe the current spam attack is related to what happened last July.

"We've been looking into these spam reports and take them seriously. Back in July we reported that certain user email addresses had leaked and some users had received spam as a result. At this time, we have not seen anything to suggest this is a new issue, but remain vigilant given the recent wave of security incidents at other tech companies," a Dropbox spokesperson told CNET. "We want you to know that we've taken these reports seriously and began our investigation immediately."

Despite what looks to be leftover issues from last summer, far fewer users are complaining this time around. So far, the forum only has 58 posts by 37 users, while hundreds posted on the forum last July.

The company appears to be continuing with its investigation into the issue and will most likely figure out what's happening within the next few days.

Bitcoin virtual currency hits record high after exchange deal

Bitcoin has staged a dramatic comeback in the past two months, more than doubling its value against the dollar in that time and trading at record levels.

The virtual currency was trading above $32 a share today after languishing in the mid-teens in January. The record was reached on the same day that Mt. Gox, the world's largest Bitcoin exchange, reached an agreement with CoinLab to manage the exchange's operations in the U.S. and Canada.


Bitcoin sprang up in 2009 as a peer-to-peer currency that intentionally avoided the prying eyes of law enforcement officials. In order to acquire Bitcoins, users access exchange sites to transfer actual currency, such as U.S. dollars, into the digital option.


However, after struggling to crack the U.S. market, the Japanese exchange hopes its arrangement with the Seattle-based startup, which has a partnership with Silicon Valley Bank and $500,000 in VC funding, will increase customer confidence.




"There are two major difficulties Bitcoin exchange customers have traditionally faced: banking troubles for the underlying exchange, and security of their coins," CoinLab CEO Peter Vessenes wrote in a company blog post announcing the partnership. "Since we believe in Bitcoin, we'd like to solve these problems."


The currency has experienced a rollercoaster ride in the past two years, setting its previous record of $31.90 in June 2011 before plummeting to $2 later that same year. Its exchange rate began to improve in mid-November when the popular blogging platform WordPress announced it would begin accepting Bitcoin payment for upgrades such as custom designs and ad-free presentations.

'Angry Birds Toons' TV series to launch March 16



First it was stuffed animals, then T-shirts, and now it's a television show -- the Angry Birds franchise just continues to grow.

Rovio announced today that the first episode of the weekly Angry Birds cartoon TV show, "Angry Birds Toons," is set to air on March 16. Viewers will be able to watch what is happening "deep in the heart of Piggy Island" and find out whether those merciless piggies ever get hold of the birds' eggs.

The game maker hinted at turning the wildly popular game into an animated TV series last April. In addition to the cartoon, the company has also said that an Angry Birds movie is in the works, which is expected to debut in the middle of 2016. It seems Rovio's overall goal is to transform from a gaming company to an entertainment company.

Zynga is also getting into the entertainment business. The social gaming company is working with Director Brett Ratner, of "Prison Break" fame, to create a half-hour animated television series on the popular game Farmville.

It's unclear what devices, apps, and sites will eventually air "Angry Birds Toons." But it's been said that there will be 52 episodes that will each last about three minutes and be available on a variety of devices. For the March 16 premier, it looks like the cartoon will only be broadcast on the show's Web site.

Twitter to build app for new Firefox OS smartphones

Twitter is jumping into the Firefox mobile mania, committing an app to the forthcoming platform.


The microblogging site announced today that when devices running Mozilla's browser-based operating system begin to be shipped to consumers in the next couple of months, it will have an app for the mobile platform in its
Firefox Marketplace.


"Similar to our other mobile apps, Twitter for Firefox OS has a rich interface, featuring the Home, Connect, Discover and Me tabs, as well as the search and compose Tweet icons, so you can easily find and send Tweets from anywhere in the app," Twitter engineer Manuel Deschamps wrote in a company blog post today.


The new app will also feature Web Activities, a feature unique to Firefox OS that allows users to tweet photos from within any app that supports the feature.


Mozilla announced yesterday at the Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona, Spain, that it's lined up 18 mobile network operators and four mobile phone makers to back its open-source mobile operating system. The first phones should arrive in the second quarter of the year.


Like its desktop cousin, Firefox OS runs Web apps written in Web languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, but it also features phone-specific interfaces for things like monitoring battery life and phone orientation.


Mozilla won commitments to sell Firefox OS phones from these carriers: America Moovil, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Hutchison Three Group, KDDI, KT, MegaFon, Qtel, SingTel, Smart, Sprint, Telecom Italia Group, Telefonica, Telenor, Telstra, TMN, and VimpelCom. Handset manufacturers on board are Alcatel, ZTE, LG Electronics, and Huawei, with a boost from chipmaker Qualcomm.

Samsung, Tim Burton brighten Oscars with rainbow-colored unicorn blood

"This is getting too weird for me."


These are words you never expected to hear coming from the mouth of Tim Burton.


Yet Samsung, which these days leaves no competitive joke unturned and no Hollywood star untapped, delivered precisely that during the Oscars broadcast.


The ad, released by Samsung a little while before the show, features Burton playing a director delighted to be turning the "Unicorn Apocalypse" game into a movie.


In this context, "delighted" takes on a very idiosyncratic form.


We begin by hearing that another Samsung endorser, LeBron James, is addicted to "Unicorn Apocalypse."



More Technically Incorrect



It's surely hard for anyone not to become addicted to zombie unicorns.


Who more appropriate, then, to direct the movie of the game than Tim Burton?


The man who sees blackness in darkness and deep gray in white saunters into the gaming company and plays, well, himself.


"Did you guys know that unicorns were basically goats?" Burton informs the rapt game creators.


He follows that fascinating information with the perhaps even less-well known fact that unicorn blood is rainbow-colored with little weird sparkles in it.


Which would sum up this ad.


Yes, there are Samsung products in it.


More important, however, are the little weird sparkles that are being sprayed upon the brand with stars, cheek and, most of all, wit.

The Facebook mistakes people make after a date



February can make people excitable.


A new year is barely old. Hope springs eternal. And then there's Valentine's Day to add a little piquancy to their emotional state.


Sometimes, though, lovers suffer from a certain lack of self-control. This can manifest itself on society's everyday manifest: Facebook.


I was moved, therefore, that someone had taken the time to list the major faux pas that occur when social contact accelerates beyond decent norms.


I am lovingly grateful to Ranker, which has taken it upon itself to reduce the rancor that might be caused by Facebooked overenthusiasm -- the site has listed behavior to avoid.



Apparently the worst thing you can do after meeting someone in whose charm and personality you might be interested is to immediately send them a Facebook friend request.


This might seem obvious to some.


You don't necessarily have any idea what the other person might really think of you. You know, inside their heads.


And, as Ranker wisely offers: "Now you've just given yourself something else to obsess over: 'Why hasn't my friend request been accepted? Why is it taking so long? Did they even see it?!'


And from one small click, a whole new series of sessions with your shrink is created.


It seems, though, that the human imagination has found many more ways of ruining the course of true love on Facebook.


People apparently pore over their new date's Facebook page, seeking secrets to their true friends, thoughts, and, who knows, other objects of affection.


Some devolve into what seems utterly psychotic behavior, such as liking old photos of their new potential paramour. Who does that? Twisted humans, that's who.


But Facebook offers so many more opportunities for self-destruction.


There's revealing too much in your status update. Sample: "I just went on the best date ever with Marie Dupree and her sexy knees."



More Technically Incorrect



Some people, though, go even further and attempt to insert themselves into comments on their love-object's Facebook page, should they already be Facebook friends. Sample: "You look so WONDERFUL when you're saluting the sun, Shoshanna. Can't wait until we do some saluting together!!"


No, it doesn't end there.


The Facebook gauche end up stalking every second of their new friend's Timeline. ("She dated a clown in 2008? Why would she DO that?")


Worse, there are apparently instances of enthusiasts who get so carried away that they start friending the families of their new objects of affection. ("Hi, Mrs. Aziel, you don't know me, but your daughter and I...." Oh, you finish the sentence.)


Facebook offers so many avenues of potential despair that there is only one way that you can use it to avoid complication, pain, sorrow, heartbreak, sleepless nights, and that bottomless feeling of lost opportunity: Don't go anywhere near it.

PayPal readies launch of mobile payments system in Europe

PayPal unveiled new hardware today that will allow it to take its in-person mobile payment system to Europe, expanding the lead it has in the international market on payments rival Square.


PayPal Here, which launched last March in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and Hong Kong, will debut in the U.K. this summer for its first foray into the European market. The eBay-owned payments processor plans to eventually offer the service to other countries on the continent.


About the size of a smartphone, the payments processor's new gadget will allow smartphones to accept credit and debit cards under the Chip and PIN system, which is more prevalent in European markets. Instead of swiping a card through a smartphone-attached dongle, merchants will use Bluetooth to pair the new reader with their iOS or
Android smartphones to process customers' card and PIN information.




"Just like its original counterpart in the U.S. and other countries, it allows you to send invoices and receipts wherever you do business, as well as taking card and of course PayPal payments," Hill Ferguson, VP of Global Product, said in a statement.


PayPal rival Square, which was founded in 2009 by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, offers its mobile payments device in the U.S. and Canada.

PayPal did not reveal how much it intended to charge merchants for the device but did say they would be charged a "small" fee for each transaction.


"We'll announce actual pricing a little closer to the launch," Ferguson said. Currently, PayPal Here charges 2.7 percent to make a transaction, compared with the 2.75 percent that Square charges.

Google said to release touch-screen laptop this year

As the divide between laptops and tablets continues to shrink, word is that Google has already developed its first Chrome-powered touchscreen laptop.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the tech giant's new device would come with cloud computing and could go on sale as soon as this year.

This endeavor would put Google in closer competition with Microsoft, which has already developed its own Windows touch-screen laptops. According to the Wall Street Journal, 25 percent of all
Windows 8 laptops sold in the U.S. last month had touch screens.

Microsoft also has a major claim on the low-cost laptop market. But, Google edged into this territory over the past year too. According to the Wall Street Journal, Google sold nearly 100,000 $199 and $249 Chromebooks in the U.S. during the fourth quarter of last year.

Chrome OS already includes a touch-screen keyboard, which means that it shouldn't be too difficult to add a touch-centric interface to the operating system, especially with Google's experience with
Android.

The company launched two Chromebooks from Acer and Samsung last year. It's unclear which hardware manufacturer Google might have partnered with for the possible upcoming touchscreen laptop.

Having touch on a traditional laptop is a growing trend and could be commonplace in the near future -- as it is for any mobile device now. In December, Acer President Jim Wong said touch-screen laptops will soon come to dominate the PC market.

Judge: Apple shareholder suit shows 'likelihood of success'




A U.S. federal judge said today he sees merit in an activist hedge fund manager's lawsuit against Apple but did not issue a ruling on whether to block next week's shareholder vote on a proxy proposal.


U.S. District Judge Richard Sullivan declined to immediately rule on a request by Greenlight Capital to stop a February 27 vote because he wasn't sure the plaintiff would suffer "irreparable harm" if the vote was allowed to be held as scheduled.


"Candidly, I do think the likelihood of success is in favor for Greenlight," Sullivan said today in a New York court, according to a Reuters account of the hearing.


Apple's proxy includes a proposal that would eliminate its ability to issue "blank check" preferred stock without investor approval. Greenlight Capital, which is run by the famed short seller David Einhorn, seeks an injunction to prevent Apple from bundling that provision with several other items up for investor consideration.




A representative for Greenlight Capital declined to comment. CNET has also contacted Apple for comment and will update this report when we learn more.


In its response to Greenlight Capital's request, Apple accused Einhorn of attempting to hold investors "hostage" in his effort to get the electronics giant to share more of its massive cash reserves with investors.


"Shareholders should not be held hostage to plaintiffs' attempts to coerce Apple into an agreement that serves plaintiffs' financial interests," Apple said in February 13 filing.


Einhorn has said Apple has "a mentality of a depression," likening the company to people who have experienced trauma and "sometimes feel they can never have enough cash."


The company has defended its management of its cash reserves, which totaled more than $137 billion in cash and securities as of December, saying it has already delivered $10 billion of its plan to return $45 billion to shareholders over three years. It reinitiated a dividend last year and also has plans to buy back stock.

Google is invoking the name Copernicus again, but this time it's not a joke.


The Web giant is celebrating the 540th birthday of the Renaissance mathematician and astronomer who changed the way people look at the universe with a doodle. Nicolaus Copernicus, who was born in 1473, is perhaps best known his heliocentric theory, which asserted that the sun, and not the Earth, was at the center of our universe.


The doodle is a representation of Copernicus' model for the solar system -- a golden sun encircled by six planets on stylized plane.


In an effort to improve the calendar, the Catholic church appealed to Copernicus in 1514. His heliocentric theory was central to "De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium" ("On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres"), which Copernicus finished in 1530. The theory challenged the long-held belief that the Earth was the stationary center of the universe with other planets, including the sun and moon, rotating around it.




"De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium" was published in 1543, shortly before Copernicus died on May 24 at age 70. (Legend has it the first copy was placed in his hands the day he died.) After centuries of searching, his grave was located in 2005, allowing his remains to be re-interred under a tombstone that bears a representation of Copernicus' model of the solar system.


In what is widely regarded as one of the greatest Internet hoaxes, Google borrowed the great astronomer's name in 2004 in a recruiting effort for the Copernicus Center -- its new "lunar hosting and research center." The Google Copernicus Hosting Environment and Experiment in Search Engineering (G.C.H.E.E.S.E.) was described as a research center for high-density high-delivery hosting (HiDeHiDeHo).

Why Google's stores shouldn't look so much like Apple stores

Some engineers have never dated a real person.


They've tried to, but it's hard for them to appreciate that real people don't necessarily use data to make decisions -- especially when it comes to love.


Perhaps their most embarrassing moments come when they try to mimic what non-engineers do in order to make themselves more attractive.


This mirrors some of the little issues that the Google brand has had over the years in becoming, well, human.


When you've spent you life believing that facts are everything, it's hard to imagine that people might prefer, oh, rounded corners or that ephemeral thing sometimes known as taste.


Google has made progress through some of its advertising. The "Jess Time" ad for Chrome was one of the very best tech ads of the 2012.


Yet when Google has wandered into retail, it has either believed that all you need is online or that an offline store ought to look rather like Apple's.


This is something against which Microsoft also struggles. It was almost comical when one Microsoft employee explained to me that its store looked -- at first glance -- a lot like the Apple store because the company used the same design firm.


This week, rumors surfaced that Google wants to make the next step in coming toward humanity by having its own shopping-mall retail presence.


The evidence so far from its pop-up stores -- as the picture above shows -- is that Google isn't thinking different. Or, at least, different enough.


If it fully intends to come out to the people -- to be itself-- then instead of having nice, clean retail staff in blue T-shirts (what brand does that remind you of?), it should embrace its true heart.


It should have real house-trained nerds, replete with bedhead and bad taste clothing, there for all to see. Yes, you could have nice, normal members of staff there to translate for them.


But the purpose of a retail store isn't merely to sell. It's to create street theater. Apple has its own version. Google must find its own too.


Instead of the now almost cliched clean lines and permanent white, it should make its stores look like excitable, sophisticated college playrooms, where books about dragons and vast Hulk hands are lying about and episodes of "Star Trek" and "Game of Thrones" are playing on huge screens.



More Technically Incorrect



It should expose itself fully as a brand that came out of nerdomania by parading its nerdomanic tendencies for all to see and making it lovable.


You might think this marginally insane. You might think that I am suffering from delusions of brandy.


Yet "The Big Bang Theory" has proved to be one of the most popular TV shows, not because the nerds are hidden away, but because they are in full view, with a beautiful counterpoint in a real person called Penny.


Imagine taking your kids, your lover, or your granny into a Google store and having them actually enjoy learning something about, say, comic books or Hermann von Helmholtz.


Imagine walking in and one of the Google nerds has dressed as The Flash, Batman, or Wonder Woman for the day, yet still finds a way to sell you a fascinating
Nexus 7.


In fact, wouldn't it be an excellent human resources idea, as well as a stimulus to make more uplifting products, if every Google engineer had to spend a certain period working in a Google retail store?


Mountain View should surely mine the more lofty, fantastic elements of its reality in order to create something unique and dramatic.


Otherwise, its stores might simply be accused of being Apple rip-offs.


And you know where that will ultimately end up. Yes, in front of Judge Lucy Koh.

Russian meteorite: The conspiracy theories

A good hearty conspiracy theory can shine a sharp light on two of humanity's most enduring traits.


One, of course, is humanity's boundless imagination. The other is humanity's essential suspicion of humanity.


So while you might be deeply immersed in Bill Nye's explanation of the Russian meteorite, those with darker sensibilities have filled the Web with their fears and hauntings about the phenomenon.


There are few nations with greater awareness of dark sensibilities than Russia. The fact that there seems to be little evidence of meteorite fragments on the ground has encouraged some Russians to offer their own suspicions.




As the Toronto Globe and Mail reports, nationalist leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky hasn't been slow to offer something of a Hot War perspective.

"It's not meteors falling. It's a new weapon being tested by the Americans," he was quoted as saying.


We know from our recent experience of North Korea that weapons testing is an imprecise science.


But if you were an American in the mood to test a weapon, would Chelyabinsk, Russia, be your very first choice of place for the experiment?


Perhaps Tallahassee; Area 51; and Bialystok, Poland, were all unavailable due to prior commitments. Or perhaps it wasn't the Americans, but, say, the North Koreans, who mistook Chelyabinsk for, say, Chelsea.


Zhirinovsky's rather emotionally manipulative offering was countered by Russia's Emergency Ministry, which dedicated itself to an extensive rebuttal of his belief (and that of others) that this was some sort of military thing. The rebuttal? "Rubbish."


But that wasn't going to put off the local media, was it? Not only do they have papers to sell, they also have theories to expound to a troubled nation and world.


So, as The Atlantic reports, the local Znak newspaper accepted that this was a meteorite but insisted the explosion was caused by military defense blowing it up.



More Technically Incorrect



Yes, of course it has a source in the military. You thought it didn't?


Though I've watched a few movies in which exciting things happen, I don't find it easy to imagine that some sort of terrestrially created missile-laden aircraft could really explode a meteorite in such a manner.


It is easier to imagine, though, that politicians like Zhirinovsky might take the opportunity to foment a little rage.


Indeed, Alex Jones' infamously well-guarded Infowars site offered that Zhirinovsky insisted that America -- in the person of Secretary of State John Kerry -- had tried to give Russia advance notice of its "attack."


The Drudge Report led me to a piece at Foreign Policy that explained that Sergey Lavrov, Russia's foreign minister, simply hadn't called Kerry back.


Which all suggests that Russia isn't, after all, living in fear of an attack from the U.S. Especially one over Chelyabinsk.


On balance, I prefer to currently believe Nye. He is the science guy, after all. And science guys know scientific events when they see them.

E-orders for 128GB Surface Pro to ship in 2-3 weeks -- Microsoft




Microsoft provided another update at the end of this week regarding the availability of its sold-out 128GB version of the Surface Pro.


A February 15 Surface Blog post said that those ordering through the Microsoft online store in the U.S. can place an order for the 128GB model and have it ship in two to three weeks.


The new post also provided updated information for those wanting to "reserve" the Intel-based PC/tablet hybrid
Surface Pro devices. Up until now, Microsoft officials have declined comment when asked whether users would be able to pre-order Surface Pros.


Here's the latest Surface Pro availability guidance:




At Best Buy (U.S.): Inventory levels are increasing and many Best Buy stores have Surface Pro units for sale in-store. If the store does not have stock, you can reserve a Surface Pro (64GB and 128GB). Please note that Best Buy is only taking reservations in their stores for Surface Pro based on new inventory they know is coming in next week, so it's possible that reservations could become "sold out."


At Staples (U.S.): Many Staples stores have Surface Pro units for sale in stores. If the store does not have stock, you can place a kiosk order in store to purchase Surface Pro 64GB for delivery.


For Canada: In Best Buy and Future Shop stores you can reserve the 64GB Surface Pro in stores at this time. Staples has availability online while inventory lasts and more inventory has been ordered to ensure store availability in the near future. More details to come on the 128GB Surface Pro availability in Canada.




It seems that Staples is making the 128GB Surface Pros available for order online and that they are not being stocked in Staples brick-and-mortar outlets, as I noted earlier this week.


Microsoft is "work(ing) around the clock to meet that demand with production and get new inventory into retail," the post concluded. Company officials advise customers interested in the Pros to call ahead before venturing to stores this weekend, in spite of guidance earlier in the week that more stores would have stock on hand starting on Saturday, February 16.


It's still unclear why there are not enough Surface Pros on the market. Is it that Microsoft seriously underestimated demand for 128GB Surface Pros -- a happy problem for the Softies? Or have supply-chain problems led to device shortages (a not-so-happy problem)? Microsoft's Surface Pro devices went on sale February 9.

Iceland works to block Internet porn



If Iceland's Interior minister gets enough support, his country could be the first in the West to ban all Internet pornography. Ogmundur Jonasson is working on new legal measures that could make access to online porn nearly impossible, according to the Daily Mail.

"We have to be able to discuss a ban on violent pornography, which we all agree has a very harmful effects on young people and can have a clear link to incidences of violent crime," Jonasson told the Daily Mail. He added that the move isn't about censorship but rather the safety of women who appear in porn and children who may be exposed to it.

Jonasson's proposals include blocking porn IP addresses and making it illegal to use Iceland-based credit cards on X-rated Web sites.

Iceland has long held an adversarial stance against pornography. According to the Daily Mail, the country has already made it illegal to print and distribute porn. Now, Jonasson seems to want to bring Iceland's laws up to the Internet age.

The country's move to prohibit all porn stems from a 2010 government study. The study found that the violent nature of pornographic photos and videos, which are widely available on the Internet, have increased the rate of sexual abuse and rape in the country. It also concluded that children who were exposed to violent pornography showed signs of trauma.

Several other countries have tried to block online porn. In July, Indonesia shut down 1 million porn sites, and in November, Egypt also attempted to censor online pornography by blocking Web sites.

Like Iceland, the U.K. has also worked to keep Internet porn away from children. Last year, the government suggested putting rules on how X-rated sites are accessed. These rules included content filters where ISP customers would receive, by default, a filtered version of the Internet. Customers who did not want restricted Internet access would have to "opt in" to get the Internet uncensored.

Iceland's plan to totally block Internet porn seems to take the U.K.'s idea one step further.

"There is a strong consensus building in Iceland. We have so many experts from educationalists to the police and those who work with children behind this, that this has become much broader than party politics," Jonasson's political adviser Halla Gunnarsdottir told the Daily Mail. "At the moment, we are looking at the best technical ways to achieve this. But surely if we can send a man to the moon, we must be able to tackle porn on the Internet."

Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn Google internship trailer debuts

To their shock and horror, Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn realize that by landing an internship at Google they are actually "looking at some sort of mental 'Hunger Games' against a bunch of genius kids for just a handful of jobs."

This scene is shown in the newly out trailer (see below) for the upcoming movie titled "The Internship." The film features the two "Wedding Crashers" stars as they try to make it in the world of Google's high-tech interns. The only catch is that they're "so old" and aren't exactly tech savvy.

The trailer shows the two friends as they try to make sense of a Rubik's cube contest, a see-through dry-erase wall, and how to "debug the code" on Google's famous campus.

According to The Sun, Google has been very supportive about the use of its campus and facilities for the film. "We're excited that Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson chose the Google campus as a backdrop for their first film together since Wedding Crashers," Google told The Sun. "We're sure they'll have a humorous take on life in Silicon Valley and look forward to seeing the result."

"The Internship" is one of many tech world-focused movies to grace the silver screen in the last couple of years. Aaron Sorkin's "The Social Network" showed the inside world of Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, and two movies on Steve Jobs are in the works. One called "Jobs" is starring Ashton Kutcher and the other directed by Aaron Sorkin is based on the bestselling book by Walter Isaacson called "Steve Jobs."

Obama signs long-awaited cybersecurity order

President Obama invoked the pageantry of his State of the Union address this evening to announce a long-anticipated executive order on cybersecurity, a move that caps months of discussions with technology companies and could reduce pressure on Congress to move forward with controversial new legislation.



The order will "strengthen our cyber defenses by increasing information sharing, and developing standards to protect our national security, our jobs, and our privacy," Obama said.



Obama's executive order doesn't propose new and potentially onerous regulations targeting private businesses, which Democrats had proposed in their unsuccessful legislation last year. It also doesn't appear to rewrite privacy laws by allowing companies to share confidential information with intelligence agencies without oversight, which Republicans had suggested in their own bill, also unsuccessful, called the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, or CISPA.



Because it's an executive order rather than a new law, it's restricted to directing the activities of federal agencies and is much less likely to be controversial. Some of the components include: expanding "real time sharing of cyber threat information" to companies that operate critical infrastructure, asking NIST to devise cybersecurity standards, and proposing a "review of existing cybersecurity regulation."



Some Internet companies had been concerned about being swept in by overly broad definitions of "critical infrastructure." But their lobbyists did their jobs: the executive order says Homeland Security "shall not identify any commercial information technology products or consumer information technology services" as especially critical infrastructure (translated: Facebook and Pinterest are not really that important). DHS will "confidentially notify owners and operators of critical infrastructure" that are considered sufficiently important.



The executive order -- and a related "Presidential Policy Directive" updating Bush-era policies from 2003 -- drew quick praise from civil liberties groups.



The ACLU said it's "encouraged" by it, and in a not-so-subtle swipe at CISPA, added that the order shows "there are smart ways to bolster cybersecurity while protecting privacy."



Leslie Harris, president of the Center for Democracy and Technology, said in a statement that: "Rather than having the government monitor private networks, it is better for security and privacy to have private entities protect their own systems and networks. Better sharing of what the government knows will enhance that effort."



While the executive order and related directive may sap some of the enthusiasm for new laws, the partisan wrangling on Capitol Hill is hardly over.



House Intelligence committee chairman Mike Rogers, a Michigan Republican, said today that he'll reintroduce CISPA tomorrow to concede with an event that will be held at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C.



"We need to provide American companies the information they need to better protect their networks from these dangerous cyber threats," Rogers said. "Congress urgently needs to pass our cyber threat information sharing bill to protect our national security, our economy, and U.S. jobs."



While CISPA initially wasn't an especially partisan bill -- it cleared the House Intelligence Committee by a vote of 17 to 1 over a year ago December -- it gradually moved in that direction. The final floor vote last April had 206 Republicans voting for it, and 28 opposed.



Of the Democrats, 42 voted for CISPA and 140 were opposed, with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi saying that CISPA "didn't strike the right balance" and Republicans "didn't allow amendments to strengthen privacy protections." CISPA died in the Senate, where Democrats preferred a competing bill backed by then-Sen. Joseph Lieberman.




Despite broad industry support, CISPA alarmed privacy groups because it would would permit -- but not require -- Internet companies to hand over confidential customer records and communications to the U.S. National Security Agency and other intelligence and law enforcement agencies.



One section says "notwithstanding any other provision of law," companies may share information "with any other entity, including the federal government." By including the word "notwithstanding," CISPA's drafters intended to make their legislation trump all existing federal and state civil and criminal laws.



During a town hall meeting that CNET hosted at our headquarters in San Francisco, Jamil Jaffer, senior counsel to the House Intelligence Committee, said the protests ignored the fact that the bill was approved by a bipartisan committee majority back in December.



Industry groups appear poised to back CISPA once again. The Internet Security Alliance, which counts representatives of General Electric, Verizon, Wells Fargo, and Boeing on its board, said after this evening's announcement that it "strongly supports the reintroduction" of CISPA over the Democrats' bill that takes a "traditional, top-down regulatory approach."



Meanwhile, Democrats haven't been idle. Late last month, a group of Democratic senators including Tom Carper, incoming chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, released a joint statement calling on their colleagues to embrace the Cybersecurity and American Cyber Competitiveness Act (S.21). Obama appeared to endorse that approach, saying this evening that "now Congress must act as well by passing legislation to give our government a greater capacity to secure our networks and deter attacks."

Dish Chairman Charlie Ergen: 'I don't want to kill ads'

DANA POINT, Calif.--You might think that Dish Network Chairman Charlie Ergen wants to kill TV advertising. With the introduction of the Dish Hopper with Sling HD DVR nationwide this week, the company ironically launched a new series of commercials to promote the latest version of its ad-skipping product.


In one commercial, the "Boston guys" sit on a couch paying their last respects to commercials. "Now that we have the Hopper, we can watch commercial-free TV," they said. "Commercials are out of our lives."


Granted, viewers keep the fast-forward button handy to skip ads on their DVR, but automating the process has forced the broadcast networks to take up arms against Dish's AutoHop feature.


CBS Corp., parent company of CNET, NBC (Comcast), ABC (Disney), and Fox (News Corp.) have all filed suits against Dish.


In a brief on January 31, Fox accused Dish of breaching its contract by creating an ad-free copy of Fox's content:


Dish did not "create commercial free TV." Fox has been offering VOD and commercial-free TV to consumers for years. Instead, Dish created a competing, premium, VOD service that Dish's top executive boasted would make licensed services like Hulu obsolete, and that threatens the ad-supported broadcast television ecosystem. Contrived legal argument to avoid abiding by conditions in a license agreement is not innovation.


But Ergen maintains that he really doesn't want to kill TV ads, he just wants to change the way ads are delivered to consumers.


In conversation with Peter Kafka at the All Things D Dive into Media conference here, Ergen was asked about the new ads.

"It's not an ad that the networks are going to run. It's our team having a little bit of fun," he said. "I don't want to kill ads. I think advertising is great. I am very aware of the multiple revenue stream in television, subscription and advertising. But I also don't want to put my head in the sand. As an example, Hulu did a good job. You can pick an ad that is relevant to you. With the Hopper, we have technology that allows you to pick an ad relevant to you. But the broadcast industry is slow to adapt to that.


"We have the ability to skip commercials, so it makes sense to give more targeted, meaningful, and fewer commercials, and they can make more money," he said, adding as an example, "A single mom may not need the testosterone ad that runs time and time again. She may want something about fashion," Ergen said.


In pursuit of that "smarter Hopper" mission, Ergen wants to compete with the cable and wireless providers to offer a complete set of services inside and outside the home, and to use all the data to target customers with ads. Dish has tried to acquire DirectTV to expand its satellite footprint and has been trying to acquire wireless spectrum from Clearwire. So far, he has struck out.


In its own suit against the broadcast networks, Dish claims that the AutoHop feature doesn't infringe copyright because the technology doesn't alter the broadcast signal since the ads are not deleted from the recording.


It appears that Ergen is less focused on killing advertising than taking a piece of that action. "They [broadcasters] are trying to run their business and do right things for their shareholders. I am trying to explain to them how to make more money, not less," Ergen said. But, in its marketing, Dish talks about skipping ads, not about reframing how the $60 billion per year in TV ads are delivered.


"The lawsuits will ultimately decide the fate of commercials. If the broadcasters win on their claims, it would outlaw the DVR," Ergen said. That may be an exaggeration, but it wouldn't stop Ergen from trying to upend the delivery of TV services. "I believe it's less risky to embrace change...you can lead it and make the rules or be a fast follower or slow follower and pay more to catch up."
